Missions and Outreach at Rivermont

Rivermont Presbyterian Church is “Mission Oriented” with a view to the “Great Commision” given to us by Jesus:  Go forth therefore and make all nations my disciples.” (Matthew 28:19, The New English Bible). “Go forth to every part of the world, and proclaim the Good News to the whole creation.”(Mark 16:15, The New English Bible).

The Mission and Outreach effort at Rivermont begins within the local community and extends through various stateside missions to the broader sope of international missions. This effort is promoted by different groups within the church which include the Missions Committee of the Session, Presbyterian Women and the Service Committee.

Our motto comes from St. Francis of Assisi, “Go everyday to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, and if you must use words”.

Honduras Mission Trip

The June 2009 mission trip to Honduras exceeded our expectations as to how God would use our team. The people of the Pan American Health orphanage stole our hearts in the week we worked on their campus. These children, the poorest of the poor, shared with others any toys or treats they were given. Their dazzling smiles, giggles and hugs spoke with eloquence that didn’t need an interpreter.

Forging Strong Bonds

In a week of Vacation Bible School, construction of a dining hall, and medical clinics, we forged strong bonds with the children and the workers. God smiled and embraced us all during a dinner for the women of the orphanage. Two team members conducted a survey for Living Waters of the World to locate clean water systems.

Team Members Moved

Our teenage team members were moved by both the poverty and potential of this beautiful country. They realized the abundance they have back in the US, and want to make a difference for people everywhere who have less. One teen wants to study dentistry, so she can set up a clinic in Honduras. A woman on the team is considering a career change after working in clinics. Two young adult men decided to include more mission work in their lives. All of us are moved by the work of the orphanage, a non-denominational organization that exists solely on donations.

We felt His presence during a dinner given for women who work at the Pan American Health orphanage. We sensed His love flowing through us as we played with children of the orphanage each day. We knew His healing presence in medical clinics held in surrounding villages. We were His hands and feet as we helped construct a dining hall for the older boys of the orphanage.

How to Join the Effort

Special talents are not required for these mission trips. All you need are an open heart, and the willingness to do whatever God leads you to do. Talk with Dr. Carolyn Brannon-Snyder if you’re interested in serving on a team.

We’re already planning next year’s trip. Watch for announcements about items we’ll collect over the intervening months to take with us! Meanwhile take a look at some of the pictures made during our time in the Honduras.
